What’s your story?

Our online application is designed to teach us about you – your goals, your interests, your history. Here’s what the application entails, along with a few tips…

Personal Statement: Tell us about you, where you’ve been and where you’d like to be in five years. If you have a background in something other than English, tell us about it – our students come from a variety of disciplines and career fields, so we welcome an interdisciplinary spirit!

Transcripts: If you have inconsistencies in your record or a GPA below 3.0, use your personal statement to tell us more.

Letters of Recommendation (2): Ideally, your recommenders should be people who can speak about your writing and/or writing goals. Former professors, current employers, past employers, or colleagues are all good candidates. Once you begin your online application, you can request recommendation letters from them via our online system.

Writing Samples: Before you upload your sample, consider including a couple of pieces that illustrate who you are and where you’re going. For example, you might include a piece of writing from your college newspaper or from a class, along with something you’ve written for work – lesson plans, a memo, a newsletter, or a blog post. If you’re secretly working on a novel or screenplay, submit a selection! Feel free to tell us something about it in your personal statement. Your total writing sample should be less than 20 pages.
