Brief Description: One strength of the JVC program is the breadth and depth of the type of work our Jesuit Volunteers (JVs) engage in. There are over 25 ministries, or types of work, represented among our current JV placements. Our JVs today are placed in over 250 different agencies within 37 cities throughout the US, and six countries. Among those partner agencies, 25 percent are Jesuit works. Throughout the interview process, applicants work with staff to discuss their interest, desires and experiences, and how those can best serve where the need is greatest with one of our partner agencies.

James Madison Fellowship

Brief Description: The James Madison Memorial Fellowship Foundation offers $24,000 James Madison Graduate Fellowships to individuals desiring to become outstanding teachers of the American Constitution at the secondary school level. Fellowship applicants compete only against other applicants from the states of their legal residence. As funding permits, the Foundation plans to offer one fellowship per state per year.

Eligibility: must have an undergraduate degree and be a U.S. Citizen, master’s degrees must focus on the Constitution

James C. Gaither Junior Fellows Program

– For seniors who have a career interest in international affairs

Emphasis: Research

Brief Description: The James C. Gaither Juniors Fellows Program at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is designed to provide a substantive work experience for students who have a serious career interest in the area of international affairs. Students who are selected will be hired to works as employees at the Carnegie Endowment in Washington, DC on a full-time basis for a period of one year.

Eligibility: must be in last year of Bachelors’ degree or within one year of graduation, open to all students with US work eligibility

Humanity In Action Fellowship

Brief Description: The Humanity in Action Fellowship bring together international groups of Fellows to study minority rights and produce original research exploring how and why individuals and societies, past and present, have resisted intolerance and protected democratic values. Separate programs take place for five weeks every summer in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Sarajevo, and Warsaw

Hertz Foundation Fellowship

Brief Description: The Hertz Foundation provides unique financial and fellowship support to the nation’s most remarkable PhD students in the applied physical, biological and engineering sciences. This five year fully funded fellowship is based on merit (not need) and consists of cost-of-education allowance and a personal-support stipend.  

Eligibility: for undergraduate seniors or first year graduates, must be a citizen or permanent resident of the US, limited to the physical and biological sciences, mathematics and engineering

Global Health Corps Fellowships

Brief Description: Global Health Corps provides a yearlong paid fellowship for young professionals from diverse backgrounds to work on the frontlines of the fight for global health equity at existing health organizations and government agencies. Fellows are currently working in Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia and the United States.

Eligibility: must be 30 or less, have a bachelor’s degree by summer and be proficient in English

Gilman International Scholarship

Brief Description: The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness.

Eligibility: must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant, must be an undergraduate and a US citizen

Selection:  Application due dates are in March and October. Finalists notified in May/June or November.

Gates Cambridge Scholarship

– This fellowship is for pursuing a graduate degree at the University of Cambridge, U.K. The SJU internal deadline is Sept. 1st (the fellowship deadline is October 11, 2017): https://www.gatescambridge.org/.

Emphasis: Academic (graduate studies), Research, International (U.K.).

Brief Description: The Trust awards Gates Cambridge Graduate Scholarships, prestigious international scholarships that enable outstanding graduates from outside the United Kingdom to study at the University of Cambridge. The aim of the program is to create a network of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others. Gates Cambridge Scholarships are awarded on the following criteria: intellectual ability, leadership capacity, a good fit with Cambridge, and a commitment to improving the lives of others.

Eligibility: must have completed a bachelor’s degree or degree required for the graduate program of study,  open to non U.S. citizens as well, must be admitted to the University of Cambridge graduate program.

Fulbright U.S. Student Scholarship Program

Brief Description:

Open Study/Research Award: The Fulbright Study/Research Award is the traditional award opportunity where a candidate designs a proposal for a specific country.

English Teaching Assistant (ETA’s): The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant programs place grantees in schools overseas to supplement local English language instruction and to provide a native speaker presence in the classrooms. Language proficiency is required for some countries (see website above).

Critical Language Enhancement Award: The Critical Language Enhancement Award provides a supplement in the Fulbright U.S. Student Program for grantees to receive between three and six month of intensive language study in addition to their research or study grants. This opportunity is available for select languages and in limited host countries.

Fulbright National Geographic Digital Storytelling: This fellowship is only for students with advanced experience in digital filmmaking. It provides a unique platform for American students to develop global narratives and discuss commonalities across borders around a common issue or theme.

STEM summer undergraduate fellowships: provide $8,000 to do a summer research fellowship abroad

Eligibility: must be a U.S. citizen and have a bachelor’s degree at time of fellowship.

Selection: SJU internal deadline Sept. 8th, 2017. Scholarship deadline Oct. 6th, 2017, an interview is not required, finalist announced in Jan., winners in April (depends on the country).

Emphasis: Academic, Other: Predoctoral and Dissertation awards for those seeking PhD or ScD

Brief Description: The Ford Foundation Predoctoral, Dissertation, and Postdoctoral Fellowships are to support scholars whose goal is to strengthen and increase diversity in academe. Predoctoral and Dissertation Awards are for research-based study in behavioral and social sciences, life and physical sciences, math and engineering, and the humanities leading to the PhD or ScD degrees only.

Eligibility: for graduating college seniors, for US citizens and permanent residents.
