Fraternity and Sorority Community

@ Saint Joseph's University

Approximately 22% of the SJU Undergraduate student population is a member of a social fraternity or sorority. Fraternity men and sorority women are also Red Shirts, Hawk Hosts, RA's, Summer Scholars, Collegiate Challenge Leaders, APEX Leaders, and athletes.  We pride ourselves on being exemplary members of the community in many different ways.  SJU is home to 8 social fraternities and sororities and four governing councils.

Fraternities and sororities provide a home away from home and encourage unique and lasting friendships that last for more than four years, but for life. Joining a fraternity or sorority exposes students to a large network of collegiate members and alumni that can help undergraduates transition successfully into college life and help them find opportunities that will enhance their development both on campus and as alumni.

Being part of a fraternal organization is a special bond between a fraternity brother or sorority sister. Our community values Leadership, Friendship, Academic Excellence, Community Service, Community Engagement, Risk Prevention, and Education, Philanthropy and Ritual. Many of our national organizations have been around for over 100 years and have a rich and diverse history both on campus and across the country.

Based on ancient Greek principles, fraternities and sororities exhibit their values in action by contributing to worthy many diverse and worthy causes in the community. Our chapters and organizations also constantly strive for academic success.  Fraternities and sororities develop ongoing programs and initiatives that are designed to help students achieve academic goals and to pursue the goal of philanthropic and community engagement in a variety of ways.

With so many organizations to choose from, there is a home for everyone interested in joining our community.

Scholarship

Academic excellence is a vital aspect of fraternity and sorority membership at SJU. Scholastic standards are important for each chapter and the community as a whole with our communities surpassing all men's and all women's GPA.  Our highest academic chapter, Alpha Gamma Delta (AGD) has a cumulative average of 3.51 (Verified 10/2018). Programming, incentives, recognition and ongoing support help fraternity and sorority members achieve academic success. Academic achievement is the reason students are at SJU: fraternities and sororities are designed to help their members meet that goal and succeed while on campus and after graduation.  We also have an active chapter of Order of Omega, a National Honor Society that the top 3% of our fraternity and sorority members can be inducted into giving them access to scholarship and fellowships.

Leadership

Developing leaders today for life after college is an important part of Greek involvement. Fraternity and sorority members participate in a variety of programs that provide leadership development. There are many ways to be a leader in SJU’s Greek community, including a chapter or council officer position, national or regional leadership conferences, campus-based leadership opportunities or committee involvement.

Service

Service is a meaningful pillar of fraternity and sorority involvement at SJU that is seen in our campus community. It is perhaps the most personally rewarding of the pillars, as members are provided with opportunities to participate in hands-on volunteer work and implement philanthropic events to raise money for charitable causes. The opportunities ensure that fraternity and sorority members will have an impact on their community and develop lifelong habits of giving back. Our community raises thousands of dollars annually and educates members, students and the community about important social issues through their fundraising and events.

Brotherhood/Sisterhood

Joining a fraternity or sorority is about building lifelong relationships that extend beyond ordinary friendships. Bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood are formed within an organization and provide SJU Greeks with a home away from home, mentorship, career networking and a sense of community at our university. Fraternity and sorority members enjoy lifelong connections that can provide support and celebration in life’s significant moments and challenging moments.
