Company/Organization:

Philadelphia Magazine

Briefly describe your main roles within your internship.

"At Philadelphia magazine, I copy write and edit for social media platforms, Google analytics research, assist with Philadelphia magazine events, etc. There are a lot of other things I do but those are the three main aspects of the internship that I really enjoy."

Describe the day to day schedule in this role.

"When I get to work, I check my email regarding the daily tasks I need to complete. I start the day by brainstorming some ideas for social media pages based on the articles that have come out on their website for that day. I usually make three captions for each article because I like to give them options to choose from. Then I research potentials clients to be advertised in the magazine. These two tasks are what I do on a daily basis. Throughout the day I get emails giving me more things to do such as creating Excel documents with wedding vendors or restaurants in the area."

How did you land your internship?

"I attended Philadelphia magazine's Best of Philly event with my mom and loved it and really wanted to be a part of the process of planning it. I heard about the internship in my class 'Integrating Marketing and Communications.' My boss came in and talked to my class about the internship. After she gave her presentation, I immediately emailed her and explained how much I was interested and told her that I attended the event over the summer and wanted to be a part of the team."

What skills do you use on a daily basis in this role?

"I think creativity and organization are two really big skills to have in this internship because making the social media post captions you need to be creative in order to grab the attention of their followers. Organization is also a really big skill because sometimes you get thrown a lot of things at once and it is important to keep yourself organized so that you don't mess up."

How did your SJU education prepare you for this opportunity?

"SJU definitely prepared me for this internship because a lot of things I have learned in my classes are brought up in my internship. For example, the importance of social media in marketing has been a theme in my classes. Also, in general SJU taught me to be a well-rounded student and I think that has allowed me to be open-minded into trying new things."

What is some advice you would give to students who are searching for internships and jobs?

"The advice I would give to students who are searching for internships is that they are worth it because you gain so much experience being in the 'real world.' You meet so many people which allows you to network and you never know the opportunities you could stumble upon just from an internship."
