What is the Alliance?

The Alliance is a volunteer committee of faculty, staff, students and administrators who support education, tolerance, dialogue and mutual respect around the complex issues of human sexuality and sexual orientation within the context of the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church and our mission as a Jesuit, Catholic University.

History of the Alliance

Initially called COSASM, the Alliance was created in 1989 by three members of the Saint Joseph's community: Richard O'Malley (Administrator), Vincent Genovese, S.J. (Theologian), and Lourene Nevels (Psychologist). The organization was formed as a direct response to the chilling fear and isolation expressed by a gay student in an anonymous letter to the student newspaper.

Established as a Presidential Committee, the Alliance has continued as an independent, self sustaining, active volunteer organization. For over fifteen years the Alliance has offered high quality educational programs, tolerance training, and support for fair and respectful treatment for all.
