SJUPride is an undergraduate student organization that strives to create inclusive spaces for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Queer, Intersex, Asexual, and Ally people. All undergraduate SJU students of all sexual orientations and gender identities are welcome. Pride strives to create holistic experiences for all members of the LGBTQIA community. Pride works toward an inclusive understanding of sexual orientation and gender identity in the context of and as it intersects with race, religion, ethnicity, nationality, ability, socio-economic status, and culture.
Espousing the Jesuit educational priorities of the service of faith, the promotion of justice, the care of the whole person, and the effective compassion for those in need, the Alliance affirms that all of our students, regardless of sexual orientation, deserve to develop their full potential in a safe and accepting climate.
The sensitive and complex issue of sexual orientation can generate strong emotional responses. Some adolescents experience an intensely painful struggle to understand their own sexuality. Many feel isolated and alienated, while others experience homophobic treatment and attitudes from their peers.
The Alliance fosters open and honest discussion about the diverse issues surrounding sexual orientation and sexual minorities within the teaching of the Catholic Church and the educational mission of the University. The Alliance works to effect an environment where homophobia and hatred are replaced by mutual understanding and respect, acceptance and inclusiveness.
