I am pleased to announce that prominent civil rights leader and esteemed Congressman John Lewis (GA) will visit Saint Joseph\u2019s University on Monday, April 16, to deliver an address at 10 a.m., in the Michael J. Hagan \u201985 Arena.<\/p>\n

This visit is very special as it coincides with the University\u2019s year-long commemoration of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.\u2019s campus visit fifty years ago. Congressman Lewis was a close friend of Dr. King and considered him a mentor. He will no doubt share personal stories and recollections with our campus community and add depth to our own study of Dr. King\u2019s legacy, already well underway.<\/p>\n

We are honored to have this steadfast civil rights champion visit our campus. Congressman Lewis embodies all that we strive to nurture in our own students \u2014 empathy, courage, commitment, action and unwavering service to justice. Our community is grateful to the MLK 50th Anniversary Commemoration Planning Committee, led by Dr. Monica Nixon and Dr. Randall Miller, for their work in scheduling thoughtful and impactful programming around this important event in SJU\u2019s history.<\/p>\n

Congressman Lewis is the recipient of the 2011 Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Barack Obama, along with numerous national and international awards including the Lincoln Medal from the historic Ford\u2019s Theatre and the only John F. Kennedy \u201cProfile in Courage Award\u201d for Lifetime Achievement ever granted by the John F. Kennedy Library Foundation.
