As you rush to get the research for that pre-Thansgiving paper together, take a moment to reflect on this:<\/p>\n

A 2003\u00a0issue of the newsletter CQ Researcher<\/em> focused on the\u00a0subject of combating plagiarism<\/a> in colleges.\u00a0 It asks\u00a0the very pertinent question “Is the Internet causing more students to copy?”<\/p>\n

It’s certainly easier than ever to\u00a0access information, ideas, and interesting writing at the click of a button, and yet this particular discussion compares two studies, one from the early 1960s in which\u00a0more <\/strong>students admitted to plagiarizing than\u00a0students surveyed in a more\u00a0recent, post-Internet-era\u00a0survey.\u00a0 What’s more,\u00a0a survey conducted in the early 2000s found that more students admitted to copying “traditional materials” – from journals, books, etc.<\/p>\n

While we’ll never catch everyone who plagiarizes, we do\u00a0know\u00a0that the price of getting caught, as laid out by the Academic\u00a0Honesty Policy<\/a>,\u00a0makes the risk not even close to worth it:\u00a0a failing grade, a lengthy academic trial, and a ruined academic reputation are just some of the possibilities in the mix.\u00a0 Check out the library’s page on avoiding plagiarism <\/a>for techniques to ensure you’re not making mistakes, purposeful or not.\u00a0\u00a0 And read over these quick do’s and don’ts for an academically honest paper:<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t\u00a0discuss or include in your paper\u00a0an identifiable phrase or an idea that appears in someone else\u2019s work without acknowledging and documenting your source.<\/span><\/p>\n

Do not use exactly the same sequence of ideas and organization of argument as your source.\u00a0 Copying ideas, even if you don’t copy the words directly, is plagiarism too!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Always put an author\u2019s exact words inside quotation marks.\u00a0 Changing\u00a0only a few words to those with similar meanings in a passage or a sentence does NOT count as paraphrasing. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Always cite the source of anything, be it a single paragraph or an entire book, that\u00a0you summarize or paraphrase.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Do not use in your paper long sections that have been rewritten by a friend or a tutor.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Never \u2013 but never \u2013 buy, find, or receive a paper that you turn in as your own work.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
