Is the Bear Back in the Woods, and How Should the Eagle Respond?

FEATURING Michael McFaul, U.S. Ambassador to the Russian Federation (2012-2014)

With the fall of the Soviet Union, many thought the bear was gone, but since the rise to power of Vladimir Putin, concern about the expansion of Russian power and influence in the world has returned in many quarters. Ambassador Michael McFaul, who served as the United States Ambassador to Russia from 2012 to 2014, joins the Council to discuss the future of US-Russia Relations.

THE 70th ANNIVERSARY SIGNATURE EVENTS SERIES

The World Affairs Council of Philadelphia is proud of the quality and relevance of our speaker events and the life-changing impact of our work in Philadelphia’s civic community. For 70 years, the Council has been committed to bringing speakers of international prominence, and from a wide variety of backgrounds and ideologies, to the city of Philadelphia. We want our community to learn from the best, brightest, and broadest perspectives on national and international issues.

In continuing this commitment, the Council is hosting its 70th Anniversary Signature Events Series to celebrate this long and storied existence. We are kicking off the celebration with the event, "Is the Bear Back in the Woods, and How Should the Eagle Respond?" — an in depth look at US-Russia relations with The Honorable Michael McFaul, an American academic and professor of political science who served as the United States Ambassador to Russia from 2012 to 2014.

ABOUT THE EVENT

The 1980’s presidential campaigns of Ronald Reagan burned into the American consciousness an image of our country’s relationship with Russia – the image of the need for strength and vigilance against a scary "bear in the woods."

Is the bear back in the woods and, if so, what is to be done about it?

On Wednesday, December 5, in partnership with Saint Joseph’s University, the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia will present the first of its "70th Anniversary Signature Events Series," featuring keynote remarks by the Honorable Michael McFaul, United States Ambassador to the Russian Federation (2012-2014).

Ambassador McFaul is the author of "From Cold War to Hot Peace: An American Ambassador in Putin’s Russia," and one of our nation’s leading commentators on US-Russian relations. He may be also the only recent American ambassador to any country to personally become a subject in a summit between the President of the United States and another major world leader.
