Dream Camp Business Day Event

In April, several SJU Wall Street Trading Room student staff members organized and participated in the first Business Day event for local Dream Camp students at Girard College. As part of its Youth-Education and Mentoring Program, SJU Campus Ministry sends volunteers to the Dream Camp Afterschool Program in Southwest Philadelphia throughout the year.  Matched with a small group of Philadelphia elementary or middle school students, SJU student mentors provide homework help and literacy enrichment.

Jim McCue ’11, a seasoned Dream Camp volunteer, recognized the value of introducing these young students to simple business etiquette.  Many students plan to interview with high schools and for part-time jobs within the next two years and McCue wanted to offer Dream Camp students the opportunity to practice desired skills.  Business Day volunteers included Finance majors Jim McCue ’11, Tim O’Neill ’11, Erich Yost ’11, and graduate student Tim Ringelstein ’10.  They were joined by Marketing major, Tim Higgins ’11.

With the support of Dream Camp personnel, McCue designed an afterschool workshop for students at Girard College and Cornerstone Christian Academy.  The students took part in activities focused on business professional development.  Students crafted resumes, played communication games, and practiced interviewing skills.  In addition, the SJU student mentors presented a “Dress for Success” fashion show.  When asked about the goal of the workshop, McCue stated, “Ultimately, it serves as a foundation for young elementary school students to think proactively about their future.”

Business Day was not only a tremendous success, but also a lot of fun.  The day culminated with a surprise appearance of the SJU Hawk who handed out SJU Business Day t-shirts to all.
