Online Teaching Workshops

A workshop on Online Teaching Strategies was held on Thursday, February 23.  The session was moderated by Steve Porth.  Joe Ragan and Katie Campbell each presented how they teach online and what works best for them. Both discussed the use of Wimba as a synchronous tool to engage students on a personal level, and gave divergent examples of how they achieved this goal. The use of narrated presentations, threaded discussions, blogs and wikis was also presented.   Great points of discussion were generated, both pedagogical and practical. WSTR Business Day Event

On February 22nd, the Wall Street Trading Room (WSTR) staff returned to Girard College for the second annual Business Day event.  Approximately 20 middle school students, enrolled in the Dream Camp after school program, participated in games and activities designed to introduce students to proper business dress and etiquette. As part of its Youth-Education and Mentoring Program, SJU Campus Ministry sends volunteers to the Dream Camp Afterschool Program in Southwest Philadelphia throughout the year.  Jim McCue ’11, a former WSTR staff member, organized the first event last spring.  This year, WSTR staff representatives included Cal Escue ’12, Andrew Suleiman ’13 and Tim Ringelstein ’10 (MBA ’12) who were joined by SJU weekly service volunteers and Temple students.

The afternoon began with a Dress for Success event. Dream Camp students indicated their approval or disapproval for the WSTR staff’s wardrobe and interesting discussions ensued over appropriate dress for interviews, meetings, and various job descriptions. The students impressed the WSTR staff with their keen insight. One sixth grader had a remarkable sense of proper business etiquette that echoed professional opinion.  She found Cal’s professional attire distracting.  Cal had recently attended the BLC session on Dress for Success at SJU.  A presenter at that workshop cautioned SJU students against overdressing which could be a distraction to potential employers.

Dream Camp students continued to amaze the WSTR staff with their communication skills through eye contact games and personal interviews. In addition, students successfully demonstrated one of their new skills by participating in a tie tying contest.

The afternoon ended with the distribution of give-aways that included t-shirts, notebooks, pens, water bottles and other items donated by various HSB departments. And the Winners are…

Each semester, the Wall Street Trading Room, in conjunction with the SJU College Chapter of Global Association of Risk Professionals, recognizes the top SJU student performers in the Hawk Portfolio Competition. Participants practice investing in a fun, risk-free way, while learning about the various Wall Street Trading Room resources.  Approximately 60 students competed in this simulation game during the Fall semester.

The competition, which is open to all SJU students, runs for approximately 12 weeks each semester. Competitors receive $200,000 of starting cash equity. Transactions cost $10 and minimum purchase price per share is set at $5. Only stock purchases and short sales are available to competitors.

Each week the top three competitors are listed in the Wall Street Trading Room.  At the end of the competition, students meet for a wrap-up party where the top 10 winners are invited to speak about their strategy.  The top 10 performers receive a t-shirt and certificate for their efforts.
