Online Teaching Workshop

Thanks to all who attended this month’s  Online Faculty Teaching Workshop, held on April 19, 2012.  Fran DiSanti gave an overview of the soon to be organized office of Academic Technology and Distributed Learning (ATDL) – merging the DLC and ITDL.  This new area will offer faculty a variety of multimedia, digital and web-based resources to enhance their course design .  It will also be staffed with additional Instructional Designers to assist in course development. Stay tuned for more information once this Center is officially announced.

Steve Porth then  led a discussion on Teacher Driven vs. Content Driven Instruction, sharing his online teaching strategies and best practices for engaging students in the online environment.  Some of these best practices include:

  1. Being consistent. Structure course modules in the same format so students know what to expect.
  2. Being responsive.  Answer students’ questions in a timely matter.  Respond and direct threaded discussions, so students know you are involved in it.
  3. Being clear. Steve holds synchronous Wimba sessions at the beginning of each course, and weekly throughout it, to clarify the course expectations and material.
