This year’s Technology Open House will be held on Thursday, October 16 from 9:30 AM – 2:30 PM in Haub (McShain). The theme of this year’s event is Innovative Solutions, with the focus on using technology to facilitate both face-to-face and online teaching and learning. After the morning pre-conference workshops, Fr. Timothy Lannon will open the event with welcoming remarks and introduce the keynote speaker, Dr. Christopher Penny. Dr. Penny will discuss “Web 2.0 – Cloud Computing”. Dr. Penny primarily teaches Educational Technology at West Chester Univeristy. He has presented research on cloud computing, one-to-one laptop initatives, eMentoring, podcasting and video production at state, national and interantional conferences. His session will include live demonstations of some of the latest Web 2.0 sites and services including Flock, Twitter and Flickr. At the end of the session, there will be time to collobarate and discuss how cloud computing and Web 2.0 is changing the we interact, and how we can use these tools to enhance teaching and learning.
Many interesting presentations are scheduled for the afternoon session, including Live Classroom Applications: It’s More than Just Meeting! by Ray Sarnacki (Management). Ray will explain how he uses the application sharing and archiving features of Wimba’s Live Classroom software to create short tutorials for students to review on their own as a supplement to his lectures. His presentation will also include a demonstration of two other free screen-casting tools, TipCam and Jing, and the pros and cons of using each.
