HSB Hall of Fame Recipient, 2013

A widely respected leader with more than 25 years of financial services experience, Joseph J. McLaughlin, Jr. ’81 serves as chairman and chief executive officer of The Haverford Trust Company, a wealth advisory and investment management services firm.

A member of the Saint Joseph’s University Board of Trustees, McLaughlin graduated from the University in 1981 with a B.S. in accounting. He also sits on its Finance, Marketing and Communications, Investment, and Banking committees. Previously the chairman of the Erivan K. Haub School of Business Board of Visitors, McLaughlin maintains an active role in supporting the Haub School’s students through job and internship placements and guest speaking engagements.

He is co-chairman and assisted in founding the University’s Financial Services Alumni Chapter, in addition to once serving as the president of the Accounting Alumni Chapter. He and his wife, Ellen, are members of the Loyola Society Executive Council and Magis Society.

Beginning his career as a certified public accountant for Peat Marwick, Mitchell & Co., McLaughlin ascended to a vice president position at J.P. Morgan & Co. (1986-1992) before joining The Haverford Trust Company.

Since its 1979 founding, the Haverford Trust Company team has adhered to its “Quality Investing” approach and is responsible for managing over $6B in assets for individuals, endowments, institutions and 401(k) clients in 38 states.

McLaughlin possesses a personal ethos of giving back to the community and works to instill those values into the Haverford Trust Company. Never looking at charitable giving as an expense, the company sees its support of programs for children at risk, the arts, education, and healthcare as an investment in its community and future.

McLaughlin lives the ethos he preaches, serving on a number of local boards, including those representing Paoli Memorial Hospital Foundation, Greater Philadelphia Chamber of Commerce, Rocky Run YMCA, and Philadelphia Orchestra Association (emeritus). He is the chairman of the Philadelphia chapter of the World’s President Organization.

He has formerly been involved with the boards of the Rosemont School of the Holy Child, Philadelphia Hospitality, Inc., and Media Little League, among others.

Joe and Ellen McLaughlin reside in Media with their sons Eric, Alex and Joe, a student at Saint Joseph’s University.
