HSB Hall of Fame Recipient, 2012

A leader by example with more than 25 years of experience in the insurance industry, Jamie Maguire,’84 serves as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Philadelphia Insurance Companies (PHLY), a national property and casualty insurer based in Bala Cynwyd, PA.  Jamie joined his father, Jim Maguire ’58, in 1996 as a Vice President of Underwriting after spending several years with competing insurance companies. After successive promotions, he has served as PHLY’s Chief Executive Officer since 2002 and has overseen the Company’s incredible growth and success during this period. In December of 2008, he, along with his management team, initiated, negotiated and completed what was then the largest transaction for financial firms in Japanese history, selling PHLY for $5.5 billion to the Tokio Marine Group, a highly respected global insurance holding company based in Tokyo, Japan. In addition, Jamie is Chief Executive Officer and a Board Member of Tokio Marine North America, the United States based holding company for all Tokio Marine operations in the United States.  He also serves on the Boards of Tokio Marine Management, Inc. and First Insurance Company of Hawaii.

He was recognized in 2010 by Ernst & Young as the regional ‘Entrepreneur of the Year’ and in 2008, received the Emerald Advisors’ Entrepreneurial and Excellence Award. He instills a culture of achievement both inside and outside the corporate offices. When not driving financial results, he competes in endurance races and has completed 15 half Ironman, 8 full Ironman (including the Hawaii Ironman Championships in ’06 and ’03), numerous marathons/half marathons and the 2011 Leadville 100 mountain bike race. He ties his competitions to charity, racing to benefit those in need. PHLY sponsors the annual PHLY Triathlon and Parkway Run, whose proceeds benefit the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia along with other local charities. His philanthropy goes beyond racing; he is a past Trustee of the Cadence Foundation (promotes cycling to inner city youth) and the Professional Liability Underwriting Society (industry education);  a current Director of the American Red Cross, Get Real Get Raw (broad based nutritional education & support), and Breakthrough of Greater Philadelphia (prepares disadvantaged youth for high school & college). He is also a supporter of many other local and international charities. Immediately following the massive Haiti earthquake, Jamie traveled to Port au Prince and assisted in the relief efforts there. He continues to support the country’s rebuilding efforts.

In addition to his many and varied responsibilities, Jamie remains committed to helping advance the mission of Saint Joseph’s University. He is a two-term member of the Saint Joseph’s University Board of Trustees and serves on the Student Life, Audit and Risk, and Human Resources, Compensation and Benefits Committees. He is a member of the Board of Governors for Saint Joseph University’s Academy for Insurance and Risk Management. He plays an active role in supporting the Academy’s students through providing internships and as a guest speaker. He is a member of the Magis Society and gifted the Maguire Pool in the Athletic Center and Women’s Locker Room in the Jack Ramsay ’49 Basketball Center.  In addition to his degree from Saint Joseph’s University, Jamie received his MBA from the University of Notre Dame where he met his wife and best friend Lisa. They reside in Fort Washington, PA with their four daughters.
