First-Year Student Packing Checklist  

All rooms come furnished with one bed, desk, desk chair and dresser per person. Keep in mind that the room is small and that you will be sharing this space with another person. Talk with your roommate and decide what you will bring with you and what items you can share. Also, please refer below to the list of items not to bring.

As you review this information, please also check out the following vendors with whom we partner for information regarding microfridge rental and linen packages. While it is not required to utilize these vendors/options, arranging these items in advance is helpful to some students.

What To Bring

General Items:

Bedding (standard twin sheets), Comforter, pillows, & blankets
Alarm clock
Basic first aid supplies
Towels and washcloths
Trash can and bags
Toiletries & tote
Shower shoes
Small waste basket
Storage boxes (stackable and/or underbed*)

* Underbed space ranges for 10 - 13 inches depending on type of bed frame.

Coaxial Cable and Ethernet Cords
Desk organizer
Note pads
Pens, pencils and highlighter
Markers and color pencils
Thesaurus and dictionary
Stationery, stamps and envelopes

Laundry and Cleaning Items:

Laundry Detergent, stain remover, Fabric softener
Iron and small ironing board
Laundry bag/basket
Sewing kit
Glass cleaner, cleaning wipes, and dusting spray
Small hand broom and dust pan

Health & Safety Items

Disposable or reusable face masks or face coverings
Hand sanitizer
Disinfectant/room cleaning supplies for personal use
Fever reducer/other over the counter medications

Additional Items:

A small refrigerator  (3.6 cu.ft or smaller)
Microwave (under 800 watts)
Wall decorations and photographs
TV (no wall mounted units)
DVD player
Desk lamp and extra light bulbs
Stereo and headphones
Extension cords/surge protectors (UL approved)
A few dishes and some silverware
Playing cards and board games

What NOT To Bring

 Air-conditioning units
 Ceiling fans

 Halogen lamps, lava lamps, or medusa lamps
Lofts or bed risers
Dry erase boards or other types of message boards

 Duct tape or double-sided sticky tape
 Nails, hooks, etc. for walls
 Any of the following electrical appliances: George Foreman grills, deep fryers, electric skillets, oil popcorn poppers, toasters, toaster ovens, or any other electrical appliance with open coils or flames
Large refrigerators over 4 cubic feet
 Dishwashers or other major electrical appliances
Space heaters
 Ceiling fans or track lighting
 Candles (including all decorative candles, incense, oil lamps or any other items that have an open flame) - not even if it's just for decoration.
 Weapons of any kind (including decorative items, knives or martial arts, paintball guns, airguns, etc.)
 Alcohol and other drug related items (including cans/bottles, empty or full; posters, lights, boxes, etc.)
 Stolen road/traffic signs, cones, etc.
 Flammable liquids
 Gas or charcoal grills
 Fabric, metal, paper or other wall hangings that cover over 50% of any wall
 Amplified guitars, drum sets, any other loud music instrument & sound systems
 Large sofas or any other large items that do not fit into your room/suite/apartment--NO university furniture can be removed from the room/suite/apartment, it cannot be stacked, and there is NO Storage available on campus
 Pets (except fish in clean tanks, 10 gallon or less)-- NOT EVEN FOR A BRIEF VISIT!
 Wireless Routers (these devices interfere with our network and will be disabled)
