On October 17th, \u200bSaint Joseph’s University Galleries and Art Department\u200b will host \u200bStories Beyond Borders\u200b. The program features five short films that show a more complete picture of the attacks on immigrant families and communities. Beyond building empathy, these films lift up real stories of resilience and strength, while illustrating some of the ways people can give their time, energy, and resources to support organizing led by immigrant communities. This free event will also include a discussion with fi\u200blmmaker \u200bAlmudena Toral\u200b, who created \u200bThe Legacy of the Zero Tolerance Policy\u200b, photographer \u200bAda Trillo\u200b, who has recently opened an exhibit at Saint Joseph’s University called \u200bIf Walls Could Speak\u200b, Sara Zia Ebrahimi with \u200bWorking Films\u200b and Erika Nunez with Juntos Philadelphia.\u00a0 Guests will have the opportunity to walk to Merion Hall Gallery after the discussion to view Ada Trillo’s documentary work.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

If Walls Could Speak<\/em>\u00a0is a brief glimpse into the besieged hopes and blunt uncertainties \u2013 but also the enduring dignity \u2013 of Central American asylum seekers forced into a cruel and dangerous waiting game.\u00a0 This series was shot while visiting the Casa del Migrante, a Catholic-run migrant shelter in Ju\u00e1rez which houses a very small handful of the 20,000 asylum seekers.\u00a0 The scenes within \u2013 friends chatting; kids laughing; three meals a day \u2013 stand in stark contrast with life for many migrants outside the shelter\u2019s gates, where death may very well be the least of their worries.<\/p>\n
