Mitchell Scholarship

Brief Description of Award: The George J. Mitchell Scholarship Program, named to honor former US Senator George Mitchell’s pivotal contribution to the Northern Ireland peace process, is designed to introduce and connect generations of future American leaders to the island of Ireland, while recognizing and fostering intellectual achievement, leadership, and a commitment to community and public service.

Eligibility: Bachelor’s required at time of entry, age limit of 29, must be a U.S. citizen, no limit for field of study (must be available at one the Irish institutions listed on the website) or GPA

Selection: SJU internal application due Sept. 1st, applications due September 29th, typically 12 awarded each year, phone and in-person interviews, finalists notified late October, winners late November for study the following year

Marshall Scholarship

The Marshall scholarship is for graduate studies in the U.K. The 2017 SJU internal application deadline is Sept 1st, 2017 (The fellowship deadline is early October 2, 2017):  http://www.marshallscholarship.org/

Emphasis: Academic, International

Brief Description of Award: Marshall Scholarships finance young Americans of high ability to do a two year graduate study in the United Kingdom. Up to forty Scholars are selected each year to study at graduate level at an UK institution in any field of study. As future leaders, with a lasting understanding of British society, Marshall Scholars strengthen the enduring relationship between the British and American peoples, their governments and their institutions. Marshall Scholars are talented, independent and wide-ranging, and their time as Scholars enhances their intellectual and personal growth. Their direct engagement with Britain through its best academic programs contributes to their ultimate personal success.

Eligibility: Must be a U.S. citizen and have completed an undergraduate degree upon start of the fellowship; a minimum GPA of 3.7

Selection:  The 2017 SJU internal application deadline is Sept 1st, 2017 (The fellowship deadline is early October 2, 2017). Finalists are notified the end of October, interviews are second week of November after which selected candidates are announced.

Luce Scholarship

Brief Description: The Luce Scholars Program is a nationally competitive fellowship program. It was launched by the Henry Luce Foundation in 1974 to enhance the understanding of Asia among potential leaders in American Society. The program provides stipends, language training, and individualized professional placement for 15-18 Luce Scholars each year, and welcomes applications from college seniors, graduate students, and young professionals in a variety of fields who have had limited exposure to Asia.

Eligibility: Must be a U.S. citizen and have completed an undergraduate degree upon start of the fellowship (Age limit of 30).

Selection:  Nominations are due by November 1st. There is a an interview in Nov. /Dec. and decisions Jan. /Feb.

Humanity In Action Fellowship

Brief Description: The Humanity in Action Fellowship bring together international groups of Fellows to study minority rights and produce original research exploring how and why individuals and societies, past and present, have resisted intolerance and protected democratic values. Separate programs take place for five weeks every summer in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, Sarajevo, and Warsaw

Eligibility: Must be enrolled undergraduate students (sophomores, juniors and seniors) or recent graduates

Global Health Corps Fellowships

Brief Description: Global Health Corps provides a yearlong paid fellowship for young professionals from diverse backgrounds to work on the frontlines of the fight for global health equity at existing health organizations and government agencies. Fellows are currently working in Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia and the United States.

Eligibility: must be 30 or less, have a bachelor’s degree by summer and be proficient in English

Gilman International Scholarship

Brief Description: The U.S. Department of State’s Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness.

Eligibility: must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant, must be an undergraduate and a US citizen

Selection:  Application due dates are in March and October. Finalists notified in May/June or November.

Gates Cambridge Scholarship

– This fellowship is for pursuing a graduate degree at the University of Cambridge, U.K. The SJU internal deadline is Sept. 1st (the fellowship deadline is October 11, 2017): https://www.gatescambridge.org/.

Emphasis: Academic (graduate studies), Research, International (U.K.).

Brief Description: The Trust awards Gates Cambridge Graduate Scholarships, prestigious international scholarships that enable outstanding graduates from outside the United Kingdom to study at the University of Cambridge. The aim of the program is to create a network of future leaders committed to improving the lives of others. Gates Cambridge Scholarships are awarded on the following criteria: intellectual ability, leadership capacity, a good fit with Cambridge, and a commitment to improving the lives of others.

Eligibility: must have completed a bachelor’s degree or degree required for the graduate program of study,  open to non U.S. citizens as well, must be admitted to the University of Cambridge graduate program.

Fulbright U.S. Student Scholarship Program

– For graduate open study/independent research or teaching English abroad (new Critical language enhancement, summer STEM research award and National Geographic videography award). Brief Description:

Open Study/Research Award: The Fulbright Study/Research Award is the traditional award opportunity where a candidate designs a proposal for a specific country.

English Teaching Assistant (ETA’s): The Fulbright English Teaching Assistant programs place grantees in schools overseas to supplement local English language instruction and to provide a native speaker presence in the classrooms. Language proficiency is required for some countries (see website above).

Critical Language Enhancement Award: The Critical Language Enhancement Award provides a supplement in the Fulbright U.S. Student Program for grantees to receive between three and six month of intensive language study in addition to their research or study grants. This opportunity is available for select languages and in limited host countries.

Fulbright National Geographic Digital Storytelling: This fellowship is only for students with advanced experience in digital filmmaking. It provides a unique platform for American students to develop global narratives and discuss commonalities across borders around a common issue or theme.

STEM summer undergraduate fellowships: provide $8,000 to do a summer research fellowship abroad

Eligibility: must be a U.S. citizen and have a bachelor’s degree at time of fellowship.

Selection: SJU internal deadline Sept. 8th, 2017. Scholarship deadline Oct. 6th, 2017, an interview is not required, finalist announced in Jan., winners in April (depends on the country).

Davies Jackson Fellowship

Brief Description: This fellowship provides two years of graduate study at St. John’s College at the University of Cambridge in England. For graduating seniors with exceptional records (3.7 GPA or higher) who are among the first generation in their families to graduate from college, to enroll in a BA program as an affiliated St. John’s students. The scholarship values at $50,000 is offered annually for study in: the Classics, Economics, Education, English, Geography, History, History of Art, Human, Social and Political Sciences, Modern and Medieval Languages; Music, Philosophy and Psychology and Behavioral Studies.

Eligibility: must be a U.S. citizen, have completed a bachelor’s degree, first generation in their families to go to college and have a 3.7 or higher GPA.
