Degree Conferred: Residents earn a Master’s in Education from Saint Joseph’s University (SJU) and take a course of study that is the only International Dyslexia Association (IDA) approved program in the state of Pennsylvania. Program components include sessions on teaching as social justice and specific best practices for working in urban schools. As part of the deep literacy training, all residents will be Wilson Level 1 certified. Additionally, students have the option to receive special education certification. Most of the courses are online or blended to accommodate the busy schedules of residents in the program.
Application Criteria: Individuals with: 1) a clear commitment to teaching in Philadelphia schools for at least 2 years beyond the residency; 2) eligibility for PA certification in PreK-4, or 4-8; 3) strong recommendations from student teaching placements or other teaching experiences; and 4) an undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0, with 3.5 preferred.
Host School Interview: In addition to an application and acceptance to SJU, candidates will interview with, and be accepted by, a Host School. SJU will make the appropriate introduction to the Host School.
