NEW: Marketing & Communications Internship Opportunity at Longwood Gardens

Experiential learning can be one of the most important factors for students as they develop their skills and enter the job market. At Longwood Gardens, we have a long history of offering professional opportunities for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience, learn career skills, and study at one of the great gardens of the world. While we have many opportunities for horticulture students, we also have a 12 month opportunity in our marketing department. Below is a job description and link to learn more and apply. The Marketing and Communications Intern gains exposure to the latest in Digital Marketing by working within the Marketing and Communications Team to develop and manage social media, web, and email communications.

The primary focus of the internship is to assist with the daily management and development of the Longwood Gardens social media presence. The intern is responsible for writing and producing content for social media platforms, including Snapchat, Periscope, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. The intern is responsible for writing blog posts on selected topics, completing photography assignments, and writing and editing articles for the monthly Members’ email newsletter. In addition, the intern will assist in the measurement and tracking of all social media platforms. The intern will also assist with managing content on Longwood’s website using the Drupal CMS. Additionally, special projects within the marketing, communications, and public relations fields will be assigned.

The successful candidate will be a self-motivated, highly-organized team player with excellent computer skills and superior verbal and written communication stills. Our ideal candidate is a creative thinker who brings ideas to the table. A keen eye for selecting photography, and a knowledge of Photoshop and video editing are a plus. Training on all tasks and program will be provided. Willingness to work independently, some weekend work, and a valid driver’s license are required.

The Philadelphia Parks Alliance is Hiring Interns!

The Philadelphia Parks Alliance is looking for energetic, skilled interns for 2017. Founded in 1984, the Parks Alliance is the voice of Philadelphia’s parks and recreation users—advocating for and supporting one of the largest urban recreation systems in the country. We cultivate Philadelphia into becoming a healthy, vibrant, and sustainable city for all.

The Parks Alliance is a fast-paced and lively 501(c)(3) non-profit that welcomes big ideas and big personalities at our West Philadelphia office. Our work is collaborative by nature and empowering by design. We are committed to our “no coffee, no copies” internship policy–interns have real responsibility and do valuable work. These positions are unpaid, but we can promise a rewarding experience doing work that matters.

The Parks Alliance is currently seeking interns in the following areas:
~ Recreation Center Initiative (RCI). Through the RCI, the Parks Alliance supports and advocates for Philadelphia’s playgrounds, community centers, and recreation centers. Our interns are responsible for supporting the Parks Alliance’s outreach to recreation centers throughout Philadelphia. A normal week may include: collecting and entering recreation center data, attending a Recreation Advisory Council meeting, designing event posters, flyering neighborhoods for community events, and helping with the many day-to-day tasks our office encounters. There’s a lot going on inside and outside our office; we’re looking for individuals excited to stay in the office during the work
day as well as those ready to work in different parts of the city in the evening.

~ Development. Development is how nonprofits find funding, primarily through relational resources. We would love participants with a background in grant writing and/or fundraising to join us. But don’t fret, we are also looking for interns who are ready to learn the unique world of development and can help us with tasks ranging from donor research to board development.

~ GIS & Data Analytics. Our GIS and data analytics department analyzes data, writes reports, and distributes information related to parks and recreation in Philadelphia. We provide maps and statistics to City Council members, Recreation Center Advisory Councils, park advocacy groups, and other local organizations, and are working to publish them online for public use. In 2017, we are looking to hire interns that are both proficient in GIS and have strong writing skills.

~ Design. Decent infrastructure is essential for a sustainable city. We have a need for design students to analyze our public space infrastructure and produce alternate designs for buildings and parks based on the needs of the surrounding community. Experience required.

~ Public Policy. In the coming year, the Parks Alliance will advocate for a higher parks and recreation budget and publish materials on city and state policies that influence parks and recreation. We are looking for one driven intern with a strong writing background and knowledge of public policy to research and draft these materials. This intern will gain valuable experience working with advocacy and lobbying groups to develop the materials, which will be used statewide.

~ Urban Studies. Before starting a new community outreach project, we like to have a complete understanding of the surrounding neighborhood. Help us better serve our communities by researching the history of neighborhoods, explaining its development and social changes over time, and giving us valuable information on the current wants and needs of the community. The best applicants will be asked for a writing sample that shows their ability to pull narratives from research.

~ Communications. It’s 2016–social media and the internet are pivotal tools for any organization. Help us grow our online presence by managing our website and social media accounts. Monday 11/14: Susanna Arntz, freelancer and current Director of Brand Strategy at Viddler, will deliver a discussion on “Being Human in a Digital World.” Description: From collective experiences, what it means to bridge the gap between audiences and brands with technology and how understanding human nature may be your greatest resource of all. Susanna will discuss how understanding human behaviors and needs as well as cultural trends led to several great successes. Pizza and soda will be served and the event will be held at 5PM in Bronstein.

Course Descriptions:

COM 473: Privacy and Surveillance in the Digital Era, TR 2PM-3:15PM, Professor Parry

Based on your cell phone history researchers can predict where you will be 24 hours from now. You can download and install software onto a computer to monitor and capture everything a user does. Nearly every thing you buy is recorded in a database. Corporations track every page view and click. Your email is easily read by third parties. Target knows when a customer is pregnant. Even the post office scans and digitally images every piece of mail it sends. It is impossible to not leave a digital trace, and all of these traces are being collected. In this class we will look at how our digital lives intersect with and effect our privacy. Is privacy dead in the age of constant surveillance? Should we even care? And who benefits from all this data collection? We will look to answer these question both on a technological level, what is possible, and a critical level, what does this mean for democracy and society. We will also seek to put this knowledge into practice, understanding and using what tools and techniques citizens can employ to regain privacy both in their lives as individuals and citizens.

COM 473: Crime, Justice, and Media, MW 3:35PM-4:50PM, Professor Lyons

Crime and justice have been in the news a lot in recent years, from videos of police-involved shootings to “tough on crime” speeches on the presidential campaign trail. Students in this course will learn how media narratives about crime and justice are shaped and how those narratives, in turn, have shaped public policy debates on issues like mass incarceration, policing and sentencing. We will examine several case studies, such as the “Central Park Five,” to better understand how narratives are shaped, consumed and perpetuated. A substantial part of the course focuses on devising media production strategies aimed at social justice issues in collaboration with vulnerable populations. We will do this by devising and producing projects for The Redemption Project (theredemptionproject.org), a multimedia site I founded with three incarcerated men that disrupts narratives about people in prison. This course has a substantial component outside of class that is required. Two visits outside of class – to Philadelphia’s “murder court” in Center City – and to Graterford Prison (about an hour away) are required. Transportation will be provided.

COM 442: Non-Profit Communications, MWF 1:25PM-2:15PM, Professor Wolff

Not-for-profit and community-based organizations rely on strategic digital communication to create positive social change. Students will gain in-depth knowledge of communication theories and practices while conducting research projects with local organizations through the Beautiful Social Research Collaborative. Those who complete this course will know how to apply a variety of social media theories and practices to help organizations achieve their communication goals. Students in the course will actively participate as a member of a project team to complete projects with clients in the Greater Philadelphia area and, from time to time, beyond. Local travel is required.

COM 402: Advanced Web Design, MWF 12:20PM-1:10PM, professor TBA

The class will be a mixture of web design theory and practical front-end techniques. Students are expected to have experience hand-coding websites using HTML and CSS, a basic understanding of using Git, and be familiar with basic principles of design such as color and typography. Topics covered will include: usability, accessibility, git, Javascript/jQuery, designing for content management, and using WordPress as a CMS. By the end of this course, students should have a solid understanding of the web design industry and modern web design techniques.

Content Assistant Internship Available with 4×3 Digital Media Agency

4×3, a digital agency located in Ardmore, PA has a Content Assistant internship available for the late Fall 2016 semester and Spring 2017 semester. The intern would be responsible for working directly with the content manager to create and implement marketing strategies: including original web content, social media campaigns, and writing newsletters. The individual in this position participates in branding discussions and assists in initial website content development as needed. This is a paid internship‚ with a minimum of 15 hours per week.

Qualifications and Expectations for Interns:

~ Great communication and interpersonal skills
~ Significant self-motivation
~ Detail-oriented
~ Ability to multitask, prioritize, and organize
~ Excellent writing skills (pertaining to social media, blog, etc.)
~ Interest in graphic design, website development, and marketing

PPRA, Philadelphia Public Relations Association, is organizing a Networking 101 event geared toward college students in Communication/Public Relations. The event is this Thursday, October 13 from 5:45pm to 8pm.

Next Level Video Fall Internship Opportunity

Next Level Video, an event production company, is looking for fall interns! Next Level Video provides coverage of elite high school sporting events across the country. This particular internship would last for two months. The job would entail working in environments such as the company’s office, the Navy Yard, and sports tournaments on the weekends. While New Level Video has indicated that their core business focuses on the filming of live action sports for college recruiting and highlight reels of athletes, they have a large emphasis on the pre and post production phases. Students will get hands on experience in planning event operations, sales, marketing, customer services, graphics design, and video production. This paid internship offers students with a great opportunity to expand upon the concepts and programs learned in Communication studies courses.
