COM 372 Web Design, Andrew Famiglietti, MTWRF, 5:00-8:30; S, 9:00-12:30
This course is an introduction to the theory and practice of web design and development. Students will learn about web technologies and standards while building accessible and usable web sites. No previous experience is necessary, and the course will center on beginner/intermediate aspects of web design and markup languages–specifically, HyperText Markup Language (HTML5) and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS3). Readings will focus on the Web’s architecture and its history, the basics of site development, and current conversations about best practices (such as responsive design, grid systems, user experience, digital video, and mobile technologies). Students will study web technologies and apply best practices to their own goals or interests–creating, for example, a personal web portfolio or a basic client project–while developing a rhetorical and technological understanding of web-based communication.
COM 465 Bear Witness: War Past &Present, Mike Lyons, MTWRF, 11:15-2:45; S, 11:15-2:15 (This is a hybrid online/in-person course. It meets on campus)
For most of us the visual experience of war comes from images. We will likely never see war first-hand so photographs, movies, video games and graphic novels help shape our collective understanding and memory of armed conflict. This course will investigate images of war from the United States, Iran, Spain, Rwanda, both World Wars, the war in Vietnam and the recent wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. We will examine photographs, films and video games and discuss the dual purpose of war images – as pieces of art and as the documentation of an event.
We will be hosting group advising sessions during free periods for majors and minors. These are organized based on your class status. At these meetings faculty members will be around to answer your questions about COM classes, you can preview the schedule of classes, and perhaps most importantly get your PINs.
Juniors/Seniors: October 21st. Free Period. 11:00-12:00 In Merion Hall 174.
Sophomores: October 28th. Free Period. 11:00-12:00. Location TBA.
First Years: These take place as part of your COM 200 section. If you are a first year without a COM 200 section see your advisor.
The Live Nation Philly marketing department is looking for a highly motivated, creative sophomore or junior who possesses strong written & communication skills as well as a passion for the music industry. At minimum, the candidate should also posses basic graphic design skills. This internship can be used for college credit or possible stipend per semester.
Assist the digital media aspect of concert marketing including but not limited to: managing social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Pinterest, etc.), finding interesting & dynamic online content (videos, photos, articles, etc.), writing copy, graphic design, updating websites.
General office duties such as filing, organizing invoices, etc. also apply.
In addition to general office hours, candidates will need to be available on some nights and weekends. Candidates must have a car or an easy way to get to Bala Cynwyd and venues around the city

Communications Majors and Minors it is that time of year again, where faculty need to make a schedule of what courses we should offer you in the Spring. In an effort to best meet all of your needs please fill out this form. This should only take 5 minutes and, will make it much more likely that we offer the classes and number of sections you need. This only asks about COM courses so no need to know everything you want for the Spring, just what you want for COM courses. There is even a section for COM option courses so tell us if you want a civic journalism class from Mike, more Web Design etc. If enough students request a class and indicate they will take it, we will do everything we can to offer it. But the first step is filling out this form, so do this BY FRIDAY OCTOBER 3rd so we can make the best schedule.
The White House Internship Program’s mission is to make the “People’s House” accessible to future leaders from around the nation and cultivate and prepare those devoted to public service for future leadership opportunities. Interns serve across 16 different departments, and become an important part of the White House team. A complete application includes short answers, two essays, a resume, and two letters of recommendation.

The Philadelphia Film festival (October 16-26) is an international film festival that houses films and guests from around the world to venues throughout the city of Philadelphia for 11 days. During these days there will be various screenings and special events. This event depends on dedicated volunteer to help with publicity and day-to-day operations. There are many great opportunities volunteering for this event like, meeting new people, getting to be a part of a Philadelphia tradition, and experiencing the Philly arts scene in a new way.

After each shift, volunteers receive a voucher that can be redeemed for films during the Festival and throughout the year.

This opportunity is centered around gaining knowledge of running a non-profit foundation in the Philadelphia area. The internship includes but is not limited to: event planning, marketing, merchandising, creativity for promotions and events, and day to day tasks of running a non-profit.
