Why so many useless classes?

A question you may hear a lot during your time at SJU is, “Why am I in this class? ” or, “I am never going to use this class, why must I take it?” I, too, have mulled over these questions and wondered why all of these additional classes are required since they are not essential to my major. As a senior, I have to say I am finally starting to understand. Over the years I have slowly (and yes, I mean slowly) learned the importance of the GER or General Education Requirement. The GERs are required courses, which many universities have adopted.

Challenge Yourself

One thing I have to say is no matter what you do in college, you will always run into those hard classes. These are the classes no matter how hard you work you will always end up with a grade of a B or lower. You often hear students talking around campus about how they try to avoid these classes. Whether it is a required course for your major or an elective such as a faith and reasoning course or philosophical anthropology, I won’t lie; you will try to avoid them until the bitter end. I too, fell into this trap.

Course Selection…A Tough Time

Everybody knows that picking classes is one of the hardest things that you face during your time in college. Every student wants to have flexibility along with the most optimal and interesting course load. However, when it comes down to it, picking courses can actually be extremely stressful.

We need to take a look at why course selection causes so much trepidation. One of the biggest reasons revolves around pick time. Pick times force students to wait until a specific time to go online to choose classes. Finding out your pick time can either be very exciting or just flat out unpleasant.
