Some people make New Years Resolutions every year, but how many us actually stick with them? Here are a few tips to make sure that you reach you goals this year:
- Make sure your resolutions are things that you really want.
- Your resolutions should be something that you want to achieve, not what others think you should achieve. Sure we can all go to the gym more often, but do you really want to? If the answer is no, then you may not have enough motivation to work for it. If you’re not motivated, then why make it a goal in the first place?
As a senior, I’ve seen relaxing winter breaks, ones where I’ve worked way too much and come back to second semester burnt out, and others where I just did not accomplish everything that I had hoped. THIS year I’m taking a stand and making sure I create the winter break of my choosing, starting with a handy-dandy to do list. Although the things you want and need to do may be different from mine, this list should give you some ideas of ways to be productive over the break!
1. Update my LinkedIn account
As I apply for post-grad opportunities and spring internships,
This year I started writing for the SJU student newspaper, “The Hawk.” Considering some of my favorite interests are food, health, fitness, and the community, I figured that I would be best suited to write for the lifestyle section. I wrote a few articles about charities, restaurants, and shopping in the city, but my favorite articles are the articles where I share my recipes with the readers. While I always wanted to attempt to branch out and write about something out of the ordinary, part of me felt the need to share all of my recipes and food ideas with the readers.
I turn 21 in February (yes, I’m young for a senior. I didn’t go to Kindergarten) and all of my friends who’ve been 21 for what feels like forever keep reminding me how I just haaaaave to go out once that day comes. But, can I be honest? I find nothing appealing about going to a hot, loud, crowded room and pretending to dance and make small talk with people for hours at a time and during multiple days of the weekend. Like … just why?

There are three events this week that everyone should try to attend, but it is a crazy time in the school year so maybe make it a goal to attend at least one!

Watch a short video about prescription drug abuse and then discuss it over a Thanksgiving style meal.
Now that finals are approaching, some of us are reaching the point where we spend more time in the library than in our apartments because we’re trying to stay on top of everything, but somehow keep slipping behind, and as a result we are sleep deprived beyond belief.
If you fall into this category, then hopefully you will find this useful.
Sometimes, the best thing that you can do for yourself, is take a mental health day.
Let me start by saying that just because you are taking a mental health day,
The city of Philadelphia is not usually associated with the word “kindness” (we all remember HitchBOT’s destruction a few months prior). However, on October 27th, Philly’s 333rd birthday, A Day of Kindness was proclaimed in the city.
This day also celebrated Pope Francis’ visit to the City of Brotherly Love where he spoke about the importance of kindness, William Penn’s wish for kindness, and the Dalai Lama being awarded the Liberty Medal.
At 5:30 PM on Tuesday, thousands of flags of kindness made by people of all ages, races, and backgrounds throughout the city were dedicated to the kindness mission.
This past Sunday, SJU held its first-ever Out of the Darkness walk for suicide prevention. Sponsored by the Dean’s Leadership Program, the walk drew over 300 students and raised over $3,000 for the SJU and national chapters of Active Minds, a mental health awareness and advocacy organization. I was one of the 300 present for the walk on Sunday night, and for a first-time event, it was really well done.
The walk began with student leaders from the Dean’s Leadership Program introducing its importance, followed by an associate dean of the business school,
Tomorrow is the beginning of Unity Week! This week is dedicated to LGBTQ identities and for that reason there will be a lot of LGBTQ centered programming. Here’s the schedule:

- Movie Viewing: “For the Bible Tells Me So” – Cardinal Foley Center 4pm
- A film exploring how insightful people of faith handle the realization of having a gay child. Followed by discussion with special guests from the Waldron Mercy Academy
- Moderated by Sr. Elizabeth Linehan, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Philosophy
- Opening Liturgy Eucharistic Celebration – Chapel of Saint Joseph 7pm

As the weather starts to cool down and the nights begin to arrive sooner, it is quite apparent that fall is definitely here and winter is, dare I say, quickly approaching. With this change in season comes the usual slump of not wanting to leave your toasty bed, and thus not wanting to work out. I get it — its cold outside and warm inside; it really is quite logical which option to choose.
Back home I really would not have this problem of what to do for fitness because I always had sports practices, but here at school I really had to adjust to working out without my usual designated practice times.
