There is a quaint little town in Philadelphia, which is known here at SJU as the place where all the upperclassmen live. This eclectic up and coming neighborhood positioned near the Schuylkill River is Manayunk. There are a number of amazing things to do here, and with its close proximity to campus it makes for the perfect weekend getaway.
What is so great about Manayunk is the convenient location, the great events that are put on, and the new shops that are always opening up, but this town wasn’t always as popular as it is today. Back in the day the townspeople were mostly immigrants having German, Polish, and Irish decent. They set their roots in this small town, and thus were life-long inhabitants of the area. Known for industrialization, this blue-collar town once housed millworkers in its row homes, and now these homes are in high demand amongst families and young adults alike.
Recently my suite-mates and I decided to attend the fall strEAT festival, which was the perfect introduction to the fall season that is now upon us. The main street of Manayunk was filled with dozens of food trucks lining the blocked off area. The cool weather, food, and live band made for a perfect Sunday afternoon.
In order to get to this event I took my very first Uber, which was quite the experience. Everything is much more enjoyable when your friends are involved, and so splitting an Uber or cab with all of them doesn’t have to put a hole in your wallet, especially since hawk cash is unfortunately not accepted.
This festival isn’t the only fun event that Manayunk hosts, there are plenty of others all year long. Restaurant Week may have ended, but there are still more fun things planned such as the Authentic Philly Food Tour and the Haunted Food Tour. Foods involved in both of these, so for obvious reasons it will be a lovely time. There doesn’t always have to be something happening in order to visit this diverse hot spot. Lining the streets are one of a kind shops and restaurants that are enjoyable to explore (my personal favorite is The Juice Merchant).
I hope everyone gets the chance to visit Manayunk and all it has to offer, because it really is something that every Saint Joseph’s University student should experience. Make it a weekend trip, a night out, or possibly your future home! Just be sure to take advantage of the awesome things happening all the time here, and of course take tons of pictures!
