This past weekend I traveled to New York City with seven fellow students to attend the Intercollegiate Broadcasting Systems (IBS) Radio Conference. We spent Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in the city attending informational sessions and talks about web design, marketing brand, managing large staffs, and programming. During the mornings and evenings we explored the city, taking in the sites. We visited famous landmarks like St. Patrick’s Cathedral, Times Square, the Stardust Diner, and 30 Rockefeller Center.
It was an amazing educational experience and we learned a lot of applicable concepts to help improve our campus radio station, Radio 1851.
It’s common knowledge that New York City is not cheap. Fortunately, SJU granted the club funding to pay for the conference fees and three hotel rooms. This was a Godsend and allowed all of Radio 1851’s managers and directors to attend without burning holes in their pockets.
It’s come to my attention that a lot of students, especially club members, don’t know that you can request money from SJU to fund club on or off campus or even how to do it. My goal is to make this process known to all!
The SBAC (Student Budget Allocation Committee) coordinates the Student Organization Budget Process. All recognized student clubs could apply for an annual budget and event funding. A club can petition the SBAC for additional funds. To do so, a club member must fill out the SBAC additional allocation form and submit it to the Director of Student Leadership & Activities by 5 pm on Friday. The student will be notified via email when you need to appear before the SBAC to petition for the funds. (Exact invoices and estimated expenses are needed for the meeting.) If approved, funds will be made available within a week.
Students can also request to be reimbursed for SBAC purchases. All approved expenses must be paid by the student first and will be reimbursed by the Office of Student Leadership & Activities out of the student club budget. It is very important that original receipts or invoices are included when submitting a request for funds for auditing purposes. The SLA requesting funds form is available online. However, purchases made without approval will not be reimbursed.
SJU constantly puts aside funds for student clubs and organizations to use. Take advantage of them and plan an event, educational trip, or fundraiser for your club and its members. And remember: The worst they can do is say no.
