Since 2017, the Biology Department has partnered with Main Line Health to offer a free, one-week health science camp for rising 4th and 5th grader at Samuel Gompers Elementary. Designed and run by SJU Biology students, BASC hosts 15-20 campers on SJU's campus the last full week in July.
In the morning, counselors lead hands-on activities in the SJU laboratories discovering a new body system such each day. Next, campers meet a medical or science professional to learn about careers in health science. Lunch in Campion Buffet is always the highlight of everyone's day! And the afternoon is full of classic camp sport and craft activities.
For many of the volunteer SJU students, BASC is their first introduction to science outreach. We provide three professional development trainings prior to camp to help our counselors become more confident science communicators and educators. SJU students who participate in BASC receive exclusive health career exploration opportunities at Lankenau Medical Center.
