The Cherry Foundation was established in 1977 by Joseph Cherry who devoted his professional life to creating three successful Philadelphia food companies, and his personal life to his family, many friends, and countless good deeds.
During the mid-1930s, he and his partner, Al Levis, sold smoked meats and invented what would become an iconic American snack, the Slim Jim. In 1949, after the partners split, Joe Cherry founded Great American Foods, Inc., a North Philadelphia company that manufactured salad dressings and mayonnaise, and sold those products, under the Gourmay and Chef’s Pride labels, to wholesale food distributors throughout the Northeastern United States.
Joe Cherry, who played semi-professional baseball and football in 1930 and 1931 and was a low single-digit handicap golfer into his late 60s, died in 1981, leaving the business and the Foundation in the hands of his son, Robert. Great American Foods was bought by Holsum Foods in 1995 and is now part of Ventura Foods. Ventura’s tasty salad dressings—many of them the original recipes created by Joe and Robert Cherry—are still available in Delaware Valley and New Jersey restaurants and bars, university and hospital dining halls, and too many mom and pop pizza and hoagie places to count.
Since 1982 the Cherry Foundation has given scholarships, through the Academy of Food Marketing, to scores of Saint Joseph’s students—eager, bright, ethical, and hard-working, just like the man for whom the scholarship is named.
